A smartphone telephoto lens narrows the field-of-view of the camera and magnifies the subject. By how much the subject is magnified depends on the lens’s focal length. The longer the focal length, the narrower the field-of-view becomes, and the more magnified the image gets.

Attaching a telephoto lens to your smartphone camera can make quite a bit of a difference to your mobile photography, especially when shooting portraits. It allows your subject to be a bit further away from you and prevents the distortion faces associated with shooting portraits from up close with a wide-angle lens.
That being said, attaching an external lens to a mobile camera will not automatically make the camera take better photos. You need a smartphone with a good camera, but most importantly, you need to understand it and how it works so that you can get the most out of it despite its limitations.
